In addition we have a pool of experienced Yachtmaster Instructors/ Skippers, carefully selected for their knowledge and abilities. They have years of experience running courses on the beautiful West Coast.

Our aim is to ensure you have a fantastic experience in a safe, supportive and relaxed sailing environment where our staff will strive to ensure your objectives are fully met.

Our Yacht

We are delighted to own and operate La Girafe III, a Fora Marine RM1260, the only one of her kind on the West Coast of Scotland.  She is 40 foot, extremely comfortable and well equipped.   An exciting boat to sail, with exemplary manners and excellent sea keeping qualities, we had been looking for a vessel of this type for over two years; they very rarely come onto the market.  We were lucky enough to find this 2014 model near La Rochelle in 2017; she had been used only lightly and is in new condition.  She was brought back across Biscay in January 2018 and fitted out for her new role.  We are extremely pleased with her and proud to be able to offer her as our RYA training vessel and for our summer cruising programme.

Our Staff

We do not employ freelance staff but work with our core team. All our Instructors and skippers hold a Yachtmaster Instructor qualification as a minimum. Carefully selected for their knowledge, abilities and maturity, they have years of experience running courses here on the beautiful West Coast.  To ensure we are able to maintain our training ethos our staff are chosen for the following key attributes;

Their passion for sailing

Their personal skippering and sailing experience and high level of qualification

Their life experience

Excellent social skills and ability to communicate effectively

Their flexible teaching style

Tom Watson - Principal and Chief Instructor

Tom has been sailing from an early age and has campaigned dinghies at national level, raced keel and sportsboats and skippered and crewed on Tall Ships, as well as cruising extensively around the waters of the UK and abroad. He has been teaching sailing for many years and has significant experience of working with people from all backgrounds in a range of training settings not just sailing. Before retiring to sailing Tom worked in the outdoor and development training industry before moving on to take up senior management roles in the voluntary sector.

Chris Miles - Instructor and Skipper

Chris began sailing in his youth in a variety of small dinghies and enjoyed racing at club level in several classes.  A progression from there led to him developing a passion for offshore sailing that has continued over a period of nearly forty years.

Throughout this time he has sailed, in a wide range of vessels, at locations around the world including: the UK, Europe, the Caribbean and New Zealand.  Highlights from this experience include: participating in the Fastnet Race, the Tall Ships Race, undertaking a trans-Atlantic crossing and a circumnavigation of the UK.

Chris attained his Yachtmaster Ocean Skipper qualification in 1988 and since this time has been involved in instructing offshore sailing in both practical and shore based environments. The majority of his recent sailing has been undertaken around Scotland’s beautiful West Coast, of which he has detailed experience and local knowledge.

Campbell Greer - Instructor and Skipper

Campbell is a Yachtmaster Instructor and began his sailing career on sail training boats with disadvantaged young people. He started as a trainee in 2006 and worked his way through the ranks to become Skipper. He has skippered a variety of vessels ranging from a 92 foot Gaff Rigged Schooner through to a 78 foot Maxi racing yacht. He has sailed in some amazing places around the UK, the near continent and Scandinavia as well as Australia, though he maintains there is no better place to sail than the magnificent West Coast of Scotland.

What our customers say

“I picked this sailing course for his remote location and reliable reputation and all my expectation were met. I took much more than expected form my sailing course and learnt more in one week than in all my previous sailing experience. I would strongly recommend that you do not miss out on such an unforgettable sailing adventure! “

Elena

Coastal Skipper Course, RYA

“I was made to feel very welcome right from the start. I would thoroughly recommend doing your Day Skipper with these guys, I not only really enjoyed the experience, I came ashore at the end desperate to book my next trip.”

Joe Halwood

Day Skipper, RYA Sailing Course

“The sailing was a real treat, including learning the key skills. As well as the great coastal scenery, there was also the various wildlife including lots of dolphins tracking the yacht, encountering other vessels (including a Royal Navy nuclear submarine).”
